The YUKA app is a food and cosmetic app designed to help us make healthier choices for our Food and Cosmetics by providing detailed information about the products and whats in them.
How to use the App:
1. Scan Products or Type The Name of the Product in:
Food: You can scan the barcode of any food product by using the app’s camera. YUKA checks its ingredients, nutritional information, and overall health impact.
Cosmetics: For beauty products, YUKA analyzes their ingredients to identify any harmful substances (like parabens, allergens, or irritants) and assesses their safety for your skin.
2. Ratings & Scores:
After scanning, YUKA gives the product a score from 0 to 100 based on its healthiness. The higher the number, the healthier it is!
For food products: The score is determined by:
Nutritional content = 60% (sugar, sodium, saturated fat, calories, protein, fiber, as well as the fruits and vegetables content)
If it contains harmful additives, colorants, preservatives = 30%
risk-free (green dot), limited risk (yellow dot), moderate risk (orange dot), high-risk (red dot).
Organic or not = 10%
For cosmetics: the score is determined by:
Ingredient list
Flags potential harmful ingredients, allergens
overall safety rating
Ingredients are classified into four risk categories:
Risk-free (green dot)
Low risk (yellow dot)
Moderate risk (orange)
Hazardous (red dot)
The score is based on the level of the highest-risk ingredient present in the product.
3. The App then gives Alternatives:
If a product gets a low score or has concerning ingredients, YUKA will often suggest healthier or safer alternatives.
Products with a RED number are ones you should probably avoid. Products in yellow and green are likely better choices.
What I love about the app is that it helps my kids scan things they want and see if its healthy or not. if its in the red, they aren’t allowed to buy it. Then I no longer have to have meltdowns in the store because I’m not the one telling them “no”, the app is! Give it a try and let me know what you think!
